Taxi Accidents

“Other lawyers said that my case was too hard, but Hill & Moin were confident. I was so happy with them. They were – in one word – perfect!”

- Maria Oliver

New York taxi cab accidents are a fact of life in the city. Recent reports show that there were over 1,200 accidents involving taxi cabs in New York last year. Eliminating taxi cab accidents in New York City is not a reality as each year the number of cabs continues to grow. Recently, there were over 1,000 new green cabs added to cover the metropolitan area. The presence of rental bicycles adds an additional hazard to traffic in Manhattan.

According to an article in the New York Daily News (who cited the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission):

  • People take more than 485,000 taxi trips per day in New York

  • The typical taxi trip is under 3 miles and lasts 12 minutes.

  • Thousands of people are involved in taxi-related accidents each year

NY Taxi accidents often occur when you least expect them.....

Common causes include:

  • Following too closely

  • Driver distraction

  • Unsafe speeds

  • Driver fatigue

  • Unsafe backing

  • Improper turns

  • Failure to yield

  • as well as a variety of other contributing factors.

Injuries of all types can occur including:

  • Fractures and broken bones

Know your rights under the law! You have the right to:

  • A safe and courteous driver who obeys all traffic laws

  • Working seatbelts for all passengers

  • A driver who does not use a cell phone while driving (hand-held or hands free)

  • A driver who knows the streets of Manhattan as well as major destinations in the other boroughs

  • Be treated without discrimination. It is against the law to refuse a person based on race, disability, or a destination in New York City. A taxicab driver is required to drive a passenger to any destination in the five boroughs.

What to do if you are involved in a New York taxi accident:

  • Call 911

  • Document as much information as possible. Get the drivers license and registration number as well as the taxi's medallion number and the company's name and phone number. If there is no medallion then the driver is probably operating illegally.

  • Obtain the name(s) of any other passengers or witnesses.

  • Obtain the license and registration information for all other drivers/ vehicles involved.

  • Take photos if possible. Pictures from your cell phone can represent a great source of documentation and are often easy to use for documentation purposes.

Taxi cab crashes are common in Manhattan, however they also regularly occur throughout the four boroughs of Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. If you or family member have been involved in a NYC taxi accident, we want to hear your story.
